Danish expertise will come into play at the quay Salzgitterkai for the renovation of approximately 800 linear meters.
Salzgitterkai, Sandauhafen in Hamburg is, at present, a reloading area for coal and iron ore. But in a few years it will also be the scene of a major renovation project.
The quay appears worn out and requires renovation, as the external conditions and impacts have changed over the decades. Per Aarsleff A/S (Aarsleff) has been chosen as a partner for the renovation of approximately 800 linear meters of quay. The work will be carried out in collaboration with Hochtief Infrastructure GmbH – as an integrated project alliance (IPA) – which also includes two consulting engineers, a company specializing in ammunition clearance as well as the client, Hamburg Port Authority.
The project has been initiated with IPA phase 1 for planning, optimization as well as estimation of costs. Phase 2, the execution phase, is expected to begin at the end of 2025 with completion in 2030. Aarsleff was pleased to be chosen as a partner, says Jesper Pilegaard, deputy divisional manager of Aarsleff Ground Engineering.
“Over the years, we have built strong professional expertise, collaboration skills and experience within execution and project management of marine structures, harbors and bridges,” Pilegaard said. “Our project at the quay Masthuggskajen in Gothenburg convinced Hochtief Hamburg that Aarsleff, and not least our skilled Danish and German employees, was the right partner for a project like Salzgitterkai.”
The complexity of the project is partly due to the fact that the port will continue to operate throughout the renovation. The progress of the work must be planned carefully to cause the least possible disturbance to the operation of the other quay areas of the port.
What also makes this project special is the innovative partnership that Aarsleff is part of between Hamburg Port Authority and the three partners.
It is a joint venture between Hochtief Infrastructure GmbH and Per Aarsleff A/S, who are in charge of the construction. WIWA Kampmittelbergung GmbH will be in charge of explosives investigation and, if required, clearance of World War II-era ordnance.
The consortium Fichtner Water & Transportation GmbH and GRBV Ingenieure im Bauwesen GmbH & Co.KG will be in charge of the planning.
