Case Study: Aarsleff constructs ferry berths in Port of Ystad, Sweden

Per Aarsleff A/S constructed two new ferry berths, FL7 and FL8, in the Port of Ystad in Sweden. The project is part of a large port expansion comprising dredging, construction of breakwaters and a new quay and pier in the outer harbor basin. The new approach area east of the pier is back-filled with dredged spoils from deepening of the port.

We installed just under 770 meters of sheet piles and drove 212 concrete piles of up to 29 meters long during the summer and autumn of 2019. We also carried out deep compaction of an area of approximately 12,000 square meters.

Prior to start-up, additional geotechnical drillings took place, and it turned out that the undrained shear strength was considerably weaker than stated in the tender documents. The altered geotechnical conditions resulted in minor changes in the project design, which were undertaken in cooperation between Aarsleff’s geotechnical specialists from the Design & Engineering department and Sweco.

Due to the hard composition of the moraine clay, a trench was excavated prior to the sheet piling work on the water to ensure that all the sheet piles could reach the desired toe level. Each sheet pile was vibro-driven with vibrators mounted on a Banut 25 and a RTG 18, respectively. Some of the sheet piles were re-driven with a S70 hydro hammer in order to achieve the desired toe level.

The quay is anchored with anchor blocks, prefabricated at our facilities in Poland, while the breakwater is braced with transverse anchors.

Alongside the quay work we drove 212 concrete piles, measuring 35×35 centimeters each, for the ramp foundations. Centrum Pæle in Sweden  supplied the piles.

After sand-filling of the quay, we carried out deep compaction using vibro wings/vibrator in the loose embedded sand – totaling approximately 7,000 spots of vibro-driving at depths of six to 10 meters. We per-formed CPT tests both before and after the deep compaction in order to control the relative density of the sand and to prove that the deep compaction had achieved the desired effect.

SFT Parallel Motion Fenders installed at Ystad Cruise Terminal

ShibataFenderTeam supported its customer, Per Aarsleff A/S, with the installation of 16 sets of Parallel Motion Fender Systems (including steel panels of 2,200 x 4,800 mm) for berths 7 & 8 at the  Cruise Terminal in Ystad. The team from SFT’s production plant in Germany was on site for three days in August 2020 to assist during the first  installation steps.

SFT’s delivery to Ystad included two specially  designed Guide Wall Systems, each consisting

of several Element Fenders and six hinged steel panels 4,800 x 2,450 mm. Additionally, 14 sets of T-Head Bollards (75t capacity) and 20 Pillar Bollards (different capacities) were installed at the berth.

Per Aarsleff A/S handled the installation of the remaining 12 sets of Parallel Motion Fender  Systems under their own management.
