Caltrans awarded a $10.9 million construction contract (includes federal funding) to Benicia, California-based Golden State Bridge Inc. for fender replacement of Tower Bridge in Sacramento, California.

Golden State Bridge Inc. purchased a Link-Belt 150-ton (136.08-mt) 238 HSL lattice crawler to place on a barge to complete pile driving for the bridge’s fender system. Replacing the existing timber fender system with updated materials will ensure the fender system will continue to protect marine vessels, aid in navigation as applicable, and protect bridge piers.

“We sized the 238 HSL for this project and its worked exactly as planned,” said President of Golden State Bridge Inc, Dave Riccitiello.

The project is being completed in two phases with one pier being completed by July through October 2019 and second pier July through October 2020. Once piling is driven 70-80 ft. (21.3 – 24.3 m) below mudline of the river, a new fender system will be constructed out of plastic lumber and structural steel.

“We’ve driven a lot of pile on this project, using the King Kong (APE) vibro and its handled it very well,” said Riccitiello.

Link-Belt Cranes, with headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky, is a leader in the design and manufacture of telescopic boom and lattice boom cranes for the construction industry worldwide.
