PROBLEM
The Gulf Coast has been recovering from the devastating aftermath of one of the most destructive storms to ever reach land in North America for over 12 years. Hurricane Katrina was the costliest natural disaster and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in United States history. This caused approximately 23 breaches in drainage canal levees and floodwalls.
One thing made apparent from this deadly storm was the fact that New Orleans had poor drainage systems that would not be able to withstand future storms.
SOLUTION
Pittsburgh Pipe was proud to be involved in many of the Hurricane Katrina rebuilding projects. We are continuing to protect New Orleans from future natural disasters with SELA 26. SELA projects consist of several individual project components that are designed and constructed throughout the tri-parish area to reduce flooding caused by 10 – year frequency rainfall events. Pittsburgh Pipe is supplying more than 300,000 feet of 12” pipe piles to support many of the new storm-water canals along with the Florida Avenue phases of the project and prevent a disaster like Hurricane Katrina from happening again.
RESULT
The accumulation of storm-water on streets will decrease due to additional below ground storage and a more efficient conveyance of storm-water out of the city by the new canal system. 300,000 feet of 12.75” pipe piles supplied by Pittsburgh Pipe help constitute the foundation on which this project is being built. A lot of time and effort went into this project, and we couldn’t be more proud of the Pittsburgh Pipe team that was and continue to be involved.
